Kitchens and bathrooms sell homes...Curb appeal is good too.

Set budgets for your updates so you do not get in over your head. Start with the room that bugs you the most. Or start with the easier and cheaper rooms, like a bedroom, paint, crown moldings, window treatment, rugs, etc. and work your way up. Just a matter of preference and budget.
You'd think a bathroom would be the easiest to do because of its size, but it's really a bear considering what you want to do. Paint, easy. Tiling-- ripping out and redoing-- is a lot of mess and work. Tiling and new fixtures, you are looking at the bear rearing its head. Yes, it will look fabulous once it is done, but it's a lot of work.unYou'd think a bathroom would be the easiest to do, but it's really a bear considering what you want to do. Paint, easy. B.Enne is absolutely right; kitchens and baths sell homes. I bought my house because other people didn't want to tackle a 50s kitchen (which I think is charming) and the 50's baths.
Kitchens I think are really doable, but expensive if you are gutting the room. A friend had plans for a $40,000+ new kitchen, but ended up painting the cabinets, putting in a new countertop, replacing a cantankerous stove to match the other appliances, and re-tiling the backsplash. They just laid in new laminate floors and created a very nice, modern space for about 10% of what they had planned out originally.
Start at the place you think needs some refreshing unless you are looking to sell the house in the next couple of years. Paint is the easiest update. New lighting fixtures can change a room as can nice curtains or drapes or blinds.
Start with checking wiring and plumbing to see if they need updating. Wiring is sometimes not adequate for modern day appliances and gadgets and plumbing may be outdated as well. Then choose which room you want changed and start there. If update includes new furniture shop around to find your taste and style.; then look at carpet or flooring; next choose paint and begin there before new floors or furniture enter the picture.
