Wanting to use the two paints I've received from hometalk, I wanted to try and make a country looking hanging coat rack. There's not much to it, just a board that one of the local sawmill's were throwing away, 4 pegs, and some paint. I only have about $10 in this project, plus have items left over for other projects. It took about a week to finish, only because I wanted to let each coat of paint dry.
First thing I did was to sand down the board a little to knock down some of the roughness. It's not smooth, but at least I won't get splinters now while working on it.
The first paint I used was Country Chic Elegance clay paint. Oh, and btw, I'm partially color-blind, so am hoping others can tell the difference between this color and the next color.
The next coat was Heritage Collection chalk paint in Cobblestone. I can't tell the difference in the color, but maybe when I sand it, I'll be able to see the difference...if not, it's got two good coats. lol
The next coat is Rust-Oleum chalked ultra matte paint in white.
My husband helped on this next part, as I'm not the greatest with power tools. lol
The pegs went in next, and yes, he did them as well because I didn't want to mess with the glue.
After the pegs were in, I gave them a coat of each color gray. I also painted them with the white, but the picture was blurry.
I took 220 grit sandpaper and distressed it, mainly in the spots where the coats will hang.
Here is a close-up of the distressing.
My husband drilled holes toward each end on the top and attached white cup hooks. I then took crème wax and coated all over the paint.
This is what it looks like now that it is all done. I think it turned out pretty well for what I was going for.

Great idea. Do one for the kids too. Maybe they can hang up their own coats now if they can reach the hanging pegs.

I have made these for years in my house, closets, garage etc. I make sure the board is longer than 16 inches. then I find the studs in wall and drill thru to them. it is much more stable and less likely to fall off wall then to use hooks. My family was not gentle enough for this to hang on hooks and it would have fallen and knocked someone in the head. If a rental it is easy to remove and patch, particularly in closets and garage.
