My expensive silk trees are very hard to 'dust'. They Look 'OLD'. Any easy way to clean them that doesn't take all day or how could I make them 'in style' again? I hate to throw them away especially my pink dogwood and my pink bougainvillea! HELP!

Best thing to do is take them outside... blow off any loose dust with a vacuum on set on blow (most canister and shop vacs have this) or with an air hose ..then use a spray bottle with water and a few drops of Dawn dish soap and spray them down (the Dawn will break down the oily deposits on the leaves, from heating and AC, that attracts and holds the dust)...let them sit about 10 min. then using a fine mist, rinse off thoroughly, shake off excess water, and let air dry.

Update pots with metallic finishes like Rustoleum Hammered Metal spray paints (silver, copper, bronze, gold,) etc. For plastic or Ceramic pots use a primer (like one for plastics) to ensure a good finish.

Patience, and good materials will make for a good result... there may be no "quick fix" here.

This is also good to clean dusty artificial Chritmas trees

I have heard using a hair blow dryer if your plants are just dusty. I have also heard sitting them in the shower or bath tub and spraying with water and letting dry...course you will have to see that no water gets in the pot.

I always find washing them in soapy dishwater followed by a good rinsing always works great!! The luster even returns! For tall trees, I would fill the bathtub with warm water and Dawn dish soap until you have enough to immerse your tree. Swish it around to make sure the water is getting everywhere. You can let it soak for five or ten minutes if it needs it. Then, set it upright and turn on the shower to rinse it off. If it's real dirty, you may want to repeat the process. You can leave it standing in the tub to dry. (You don't want to carry a dripping plant through the house.) For smaller arrangements, I just use the kitchen sink.

I take mine outside douse them with soapy water and squirt them with the hose, let air dry.

  • Test any soap you use in a small spot first to make sure the silk doesn't get all spotty. New silks can sometimes be washed but not always very good for older silks.

I have known people to put them in the shower, under the lawn sprinkler, or take a hose to them. Hope this helps.

I have a good friend who also has fake trees in her house. She puts them in the shower using warm water. This may make a good alternative during the winter.

Hahahaha! I was just laughing at myself. One year I was given five silk ficus trees by one friend, and four more by another friend. I just put them all on the patio until I could figure out where to use them. Sure enough, it rained a couple of times before I could get to them. All the floral foam and Spanish moss dried quickly. The cane baskets mostly looked fine, and I set several of the plants into various pots that went with my decor. The leaves were dust free and shiny. I thought this was a pretty good accident. Best wishes on yours 😇💞

I put mine outside when it rains once or twice a year, I put the basket in a plastic bag and tie it around the base so it and the stuff inside doesn't get wet. Another way is to use a blow dryer.

I put my tree in my tub (close drain ) Spray it with a soap mixed with water....let stand for awhile and than spray with clean water....open drain after you have sprayed soap. A good window washer cleaner works well also. Let it stand in the tub over night or longer , take the tree and shake real well to get water droplet of and let it be over night depending if it not dry enough !.

Put them outdoors in the wind and rain for a day or two; or else put them in the shower, spray with very diluted shampoo and spray with warm water to rinse clean.

There is a product that Michael's used to sell just for this purpose. Call your local store and ask.

You can also take silk flowers outside; spray with a very light solution of Dawn and water; rinse with your garden hose then shake off the water. Leave trees outside in the sun for the day or until you feel they are dry.

It worked for me. Hope it works for you.
