Embracing The Iowa Winter Blues

Okay. It is March and my kids are still going to school late because of the cold weather and every third day, we have snow! With all this “winter” still hanging around, living in Iowa is really starting to take a tole on everyone. I can’t wait to be able to get outside and enjoy Mother Nature again.
In order to beat the “Iowa winter blues”, I thought I would get creative with this lovely state I live in (I am really trying here).
I asked my husband if we had any more old boards in the garage like the one I used for my“Home” sign (posted here). He was able to find this one. Perfect.
I have seen signs that showcase a lot of different states, but I have never seen one for Iowa. So, I thought I would make a couple.
To start, I had my husband cut the board in half and then I dry-brushed them with white paint.
I printed off an Iowa and USA template from the computer and cut them out.
I placed the templates on the boards and traced around them with a pencil.
I searched through the paint we had and found a pretty, SPRING color to use.
When everything was dry, I used sandpaper to rough up the signs.
Then, I added some “embellishments” to both of the signs using stars, wood shapes, letters, flowers and washi tape.
I am still not happy with our Iowa winter weather or the way March is starting out, but I am very happy with the way these signs turned out. They are bright and “spring-like”and make Iowa look like a nice place to live.
Hopefully spring will be here real soon. Please, keep your fingers crossed for me.
