Hi all. Did anyone try to "white wash" paint a dark brown wooden kitch

The idea it to modernise and lighten up my kitchen a bit in a simple way: sanding and then covering with waterbased, diluted paint that still shows some wood through. Probably repeating the process a second time as I used to do with some tables. I wonder if it can work for a kitchen that is still in relative good shape and mainly needs a "pimping"? My doubt is that it can look too unfinished/shabby!?
Thanks in advance.
