Don't use acid cleaning solutions when cleaning your brick — stick to simple water and soap. Acidic solutions can result in paint chipping. Seal any cracks and repoint (renew the external mortar joints, or pointing) when needed. Get rid of efflorescence, wash off dirt and eliminate mold with weed killer. You might consider staining the brick, as this will penetrate the pores of the brick. Good luck!

A cleaning solution of TSP should work, it worked on walls and brick when I moved into an older home that had heavy nicotine stained walls and fire place. Good luck.
