I got a lot of old white towels from a relative and cleaned them like my family t-shirts. Works with both.

    Treat dirty spots.

Soak in soapy water with bleach overnight, or at least several hours.

Wash and rinse, check for remaining spots.

Hang on line in sun. All day, will help brighten.

Avoid dryer. Will set spots with heat.

I discovered the white cotton material turns blond, not white, if you bleach them a lot. I assume it's the natural color of cotten

Assuming that the t-shirts are 100% cotton, if they are yellowed with age, then yes, you could try some of the answers that have been given. If you do use bleach, though, use the fabric guard bleach, otherwise there is a risk that the bleach will just eat through the fabric.

If the fabric contains any % of polyester,or if perspiration stains have already set into the fibres, then there is a chance that even soaking in bleach will not get rid of the yellowing.

It is harder to find now, but you could try soaking the shirts in hot water to which a few drops of "blueing" has been added first.

Inevitably, our favorite ones are always amongst those that don’t look their best. However, you can relax by knowing that there are multiple things that you can do to make your white T-shirts even whiter." read more here: http://wardrobeadvice.com/how-to-make-white-t-shirts-whiter/ Good luck!
