Don't make a Slit in the mattress, find another way. + Keep your Ferrets out of the bedroom....
Place a piece of plywood between your mattress and box spring to reduce sagging. Never slice open a mattress. Then save for a new mattress.
You can either hand sew it closed or use a really good fabric glue then cover with a zip around mattress cover.
