Figure what you need the most room for and then take a look at some of the different closet forms and adapt to what you need.
It really depends on the dimensions of the one you have. Some are 30 inches or more deep.. and some are barely wide enough for the coat hangers.
Some have a shelf over the hanging rod, some have 2 or space to put more.
Think about the type of clothes you need to put in there and the type and number of shoes.

one thing we have found worked well for us was to raise the rod quite high and build 2 shelves under toward the floor for shoe boxes or shoes. it has never worked well for us to use a shelf OVER the rod. it was too high to reach well.
All depends on what you have to store in the closet itself. Exactly why the various custom closet places make a fortune. Take everything out of your closet and sort it. Shoe, handbag, scarf, hat, formal wear, casual wear, business wear, sweaters, coats, jewelry. If sharing with hubby, go through his stuff too. Then decide what works for your stuff, not what looks pretty in a staged magazine shoot. What do you need more of? Hanging space? Double rods? Sweaters, coats, scarves, out of season items can be stored under the bed or in another room or dresser, if available. Use boxes or bins for small items like gloves and mittens. Have a consult with a professional organizer if need be. Then start configuring on how to best use the space you have.
Closetmaid website I believe you can design on that.
