How can I fix a dresser top that I ruined without refinishing it all?

Hi Jan. You can just refinish the top. If you don't want to stain it lightly sand prime and paint just the top a neutral color that goes with the rest of the dresser. Or you can sand the top to make it look distressed and hides the spot where the finish came off. The I would put a poly top coat on.
Just refinish the top only. Or skip it and get a piece of glass or plexiglass cut to fit and place anything pretty, photos, postcards, pretty napkins, fabric, scrap book paper, fift wrap anything flat, then place the glass on top.
Sand it down and then refinish it in a color that matches the rest of the dresser, or that contrasts with it to make a dramatic statement.
Was it Perfume or Hairspray or Room Spray that leaked? If the polish finish has been melted then the only way is to try to build it up again with varnish and wood stain to match, but remember it won't be invisable but it will be less noticable.
