    the crown should be above the soil line -- but beware - they are very poisonous to dogs if eaten

    If you live in the South, it will grow without having to be protected; in colder climates, you will need to protect in the winter. Use a sandy soil mixture and plant in a small mound so that it is flush with the top of the mound. The female plants produce a large pod that is poisonous to dogs.

    Don't plant it. They send out knees and are very picky with their thorns.
