My unhappy cat used a favorite sofa as a scratch post.

Is there a way to cover the corners without reupholstering the entire thing? I tried decorative tape but thought it made the sofa look like a college student's. Not the effect I was going for!

if the sofa has a ruffle on it -- you could possibly remove the ruffle and then hand stitch a section of the ruffle --- which you would be turning it into a flat piece of materials --- to the corner areas to hide where it was scratched

Look to the back of sofa for the needed fabric patch and than patch the back with A good substitute

Sorry for chiming in to this thread so late, but I just had to share this in case it helps someone out. I wish I had gotten this advice years ago as a cat owner.

      My best advice?

Give the book " Ultimate Cat Secrets" a read.

It really is the only long-term solution to discipline your cat, OP.

This might come as a surprise to you, but your cat actually wants to obey you.

It’s kitty’s independent, sassy nature that makes you fall in love with him, but it’s this very attitude that makes it frustrating to train fun behaviours into your favourite feline.

Cats respond best to positive reinforcement – yelling, punishing or disciplining your cat just won’t work.

In my opinion, Ultimate Cat Secrets is a must-have for all cat lovers. It's not just a cat training manual – it’s one of the quickest and most comprehensive guides to living with a cat that I’ve ever seen.

The easy access audio format makes it a breeze to digest from your computer or your mobile device and the lessons inside are easy to implement. And if that’s not enough for you, ordering now will score you FIVE great bonuses:

      1) How to toilet train your cat and get rid of that stinky litter box forever.

      2) Extra tips audio program which includes basic first aid and tips on my favourite kitty calming remedy.

      3) Pet medical recorder – an absolute essential for parents of asthma cats or any kitty with a chronic medical condition.

      4) Downloadable transcripts of the entire program and all the bonus materials.

      5) 100 recipes to pamper your feline friend.

      I HIGHLY recommend it.

    You could declaw your cat.

I purchased a tapestry that coordinated with my sofa (lush love seat & chair). My daughters cats manage to get front AND back corners.

Simply cut a piece of tapestry to size & add 1” then using upholstery tacks (the curly kind) affixed tapestry to sides is the furniture. To prevent scratching from happening again, she purchased Feliway to keep cats from scratching. She bought a cat scratching post that all 3 cats liked, and she hasn’t had any issues now for 3 years :)

Did the sofa come with matching pillow? Is there a skirt, to which you could steal fabric on the back?

spray you couch with a a light soloution of peppermint oil and water or you can use water and a ol int mouth wash , test a spot on the back of couch first to be sure it dose not fade materials the mixture should be one part solution and three parts distilled water. try thi before you try recovering your ouch it is quit exspensive to recover, or if you buy a new couch then lightly spay it right off i spray mine about once a week as its one day i do housse cleanng easy enough i have my babies cat an doggie.

Haha I see the dog picture Peg and yes, my dogs would agree. That does not fix my sofa, though!

Don’t declaw your cat, my sister did that and it caused all kind of misery for the cat, she didn’t walk without pain.

there is a spray you can use to deter the cat from scratching or roll a news paper and when you see the cat scratcking hit the sofa and scare the cat after a while it will stop
