What is the best choice of wood to use to build tomato and pea climbing structures? Also, will using treated wood lead to chemicals in my soil?

Don't use treated wood. Red ceder make a diease resistant structure.

I concur, treated woods give off toxins that will be absorbed into your soil and then into your food. Not good. We build raised beds with cedar wood, expensive but worth it. Our raised cedar beds have lasted 8-10 years thus far.

What they said. DO NOT use treated wood!!! My cedar raised beds are about 5 years old and look great.

Even for supports, I personally would not use pressure-treated wood because you are going to have to drive the supports into the ground.

I used wood cut for the fireplace only longer and even though they broke down it remained a great bed. It is really rustic looking, I was impressed with myself!
