Personally would not use contact on kitchen counter tops. If you put something on the counter, even with a hot plate underneath, it can peel from the heat. If it tears or gets a knife stab, you have to replace it. If your looking to change your counter tops, they have DYI kits that you paint on. They have many styles, colors, and textures. Stop in Homedepot or Lowe's paint department, and look at what they have that you would like. It probably will cost more but it will hold up better than contact.

don't use contact paper. a former owner used contact paper on several area walls in my currant home. when I tried to remove it the clue removed the paper covering on the wallboard. I ended up having a contractor sand the walls remaining before I could do anything with them. contact paper isn't durable and you couldn't clean it for the use you want.

Do not use contact paper on your counter tops. They will look cheap. Instead a kit for counter tops or use lumber and build one. Mine are butcher block from Ikea. Very good counters and not expensive.
