About the grass...if you have a lot of pine trees..the roots secrete a substance to kill it off, and the pine needles increase the acidity of the soil..killing off the grass. I top dressed with fresh topsoil and a bit of lime. Have your soil tested. for ph et cet. Master gardener can come out and do it for you..no cost.
Some spreading groundcovers will grow in any soil. Depending on whether the grass won't grow because of too much shade or too much sun, will determine which kind of groundcover will work the best. I have both problems and have found some good groundcover plants at a nearby nursery. Another alternative is mulch or coloured landscaping stone which I also have.
So, you do have some trees, but no pine trees?
Do you have your heart set on lawn, or are you open to landscaping alternatives besides grass?
