My landlady gave me the OK to make a garden in the 15 ft by 15 ft square of weeds that we call a front yard.

I AM SO EXCITED, namely because it is a blank slate that I can do anything with. I want to make a Zen garden there. Any advice on how to do this?

    Hi Chaya,

Are you looking to do landscaping or plant a garden? For landscaping you can find a bunch of photos of other people's landscape projects here: http://www.hometalk.com/feeds#type=tabs&... ...»

If you want a garden, you might look into doing some square foot gardening due to the limited space: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square_foot_gar...

If you want a zen garden, here is some good information:

They are super-simple, but they also should be in quiet, secluded areas where you can rest and meditate. Can you achieve that in a Brooklyn front yard?

I can't really imagine meditating in my front yard. I want to make something very aesthetically beautiful.

Not too sure on the overall security of your space...if this is in the front yard keep in mind that if some passer by sees something of value...that they would like to have in their space...and this item is fairly portable...then it mas diss-appear. Think concrete bench over light weight wood...Plantings and rock landscapes are generally pretty safe from theft.

Kevin -- LOL! It is something I have been considering carefully. I live in inner city Brooklyn and anything not nailed down will get stolen. I could never make a container garden in my front yard -- it would totally disappear within days. People don't even dry laundry in their yards here. In fact, your laundry will get stolen IN THE LAUNDROMAT if you don't watch it like a hawk.
