We replaced our old painted garage doors with aluminum doors.

The choice of aluminum colors was minimal. We went with the white doors, put prefer the look of the color the hardiplank siding is painted. We have been told the doors can be painted. What is the recommendation to do so? If we paint, do we risk the paint pealing in the future?

    Hello Judy,

They can be repainted. 1st they need a good cleaning and a sanding.

If you want a very smooth finish spraying is the way to go. Brushing or rolling paint does take much longer than spraying but does give the paint a slight texture. Just as with paint, primer can also be applied with a brush roller or sprayer. Even when using flat paint a smooth finish will ...»

reflect much more light than a textured finish, especially when wet. Also, a Wagner power painter will do just fine as a sprayer.

    Tools needed:

    1) Masking tape, ¾" being most common

    2) Masking paper – newspaper will also work

    2) Sanding block or power sander

    3) 800, 1000, 1500 grit sandpaper

    4) Scotchbrite pad

    5) Grease Remover - rubbing alcohol

    6) Paper towels

    7)Paint tools of your choice.

First step is to scuff the old paint down and smooth all chips out.

Next I would prime the door with RUST-OLEUM Spray Primer. Be sure to pay close attention to the bottom edge where the seal is placed Prime any screw holes well.

Spray down a couple coats of regular primer, letting the primer tack between coats. Once the primer is completely dry to apply 2-3 coats of the color you have chosen, letting the paint tack between coats and then let completely dry.

Your finish coat should consist of a 100 percent acrylic latex exterior house paint. Buy the Best / most expensive paint you can find. It usually contains the highest volume of acrylic paint resin. A higher volume of resin translates into a longer lasting paint job.

    Good Luck.

I painted my aluminum doors with the same solid color stain I used on my house. 10 years and not one problem.

You can certainly paint the doors....clean them thoroughly first with a mixture of water & TSP, after they drive, prime with one coat of Zinser 1-2-3...then two coats of the color you like in a premium paint like Sherwin Williams Duration. The paint will only peel if you fail to prep properly by cleaning and priming. Hope it turns out well for you!
