Any ideas how I can repair the seat cushion?

Purchased this beautiful leather sofa this past weekend for $10.00. Their dog chewed the cushion. Now I need to find someone who deals in leather repair or something else.

  • That's eaten right? Isn't it better to re-upholster just the middle piece. You can patch it but I doubt it will look aesthetic. The price for re-upholstering just the middle piece shouldn't be much.

awesome find. How about patching it, and then rotating it so that the patched end is against the back of the couch?

? consider recovering all the seat cushions with an upholstery fabric? Use the leather for pillows, bolsters?

I am with Jan, I think it would be beautiful to recover just the cushions in fabric and add some of the same fabric somewhere else in the room to balance it out. Great find!!

What a great find! I am with Ed on this one! I would check it over really well to make sure it is worth fixing. Then I would take the cushion to a professional who can probably take off the leather and sew in a new strip at the damaged area, then put it back together. Be sure and let him know that you will be putting the repaired edge to the back. (Make sure the cushion measures square so this idea will work.) Take along your photo for reference, along with measurement of the other 2 cushions.

I would use the same fabric for accent pillows for the sofa. If you recover the cushions with fabric I would make them removable for washing.

What a beautiful sofa! The problem with having it repaired in leather would be finding a leather than matches exactly. If you can, that's the best route to keep the look it has now. Patching it and turning the side edge to the back would be nice, but the current back side could possibly be woven fabric and/or most likely has a zipper that opens starting at one side and goes around the back to the other side at least six inches. Even if it's all leather, the zippered area would show on one side of the front.

Yep I'm with Jan and Mcgypsy on this one, I have seen it done with great effect.
  • What a great steal! If that cushion is removable, you could look for the upholstery tag on the couch that lists the manufacturer and item number. It's possible you may be able to order one replacement cushion. Otherwise, I'd use a curved upholstery needle, try to sew it back together, then flip over the cushion to the "good" side.

@Living Rich on Less - Susan I'm heading out in the garage looking for tags. Never thought of this. Thank you so much, .

If the rest of the leather is in good condition, I'd recover the seat cushions in a fabric that complements the leather. Sunbrella has some nice black and brown prints that would work well, but it all depends on your taste.

Your local car dealer should be able to connect you with a good leather repair person.

When my sister's dogs ate a cushion from a leather sofa, the upholsterer took the leather from the back of the sofa and replaced it with a nice fabric and used the back piece of leather to make a new cushion cover. Since her sofa sat next to the wall, no one could tell anything had happened to the sofa.

If you can find matching leather you could redo that cushion...but if not. ..what if you make a new cover for justvthe damaged cushion and make matching pillows and even a matching throw across the back. A little retro but could be neat.

Thank you all. You have given me some great ideas and options. I just love the sofa so I am going to try and find someone who can mend the leather to match, If that does not work then I will go the fabric route with the matching toss pillows.

At first glance I would agree with having all the seat cushions recovered with a beautiful fabric, perhaps a large paisley, with colors complimenting the color of the leather. But on closer look, it looks to me as if there are already 2 different shades of brown leather, so I don't think incorporating a third type of upholstery would look right. I'd go to an upholsterer and have him use the back of the sofa to create a new cushion cover. OR, recover the front (below the cushions) and the arm fronts (which appear a darker leather) with the salvaged leather from the back of the sofa, and have the back side, the 3 cushions and some toss pillows made of coordinating fabric. There are many good options listed here on Hometalk! Good luck, it's a great sofa! Please post pics of your finished piece!

@Kat Not my dog. I have had up to 4 labs now down to 2 due to old age and they have never touched my leather sofa or loveseat an occasional flip flob at the most. I purchased this at a moving sale and the owners dog did this. I saw such a beautiful sofa and potential who could pass it up for $10.00???

Great $10 deal! All of the ideas are good options ...I would definitely ask the opinion of the person you locate that does lots of upholstering (using leather) what they would do if this belonged to them... I'm sure they would want to look at the whole piece to give you a quote and some professional advice. @Living Rich on Less - Susan has an excellent idea of looking for a tag with the Manufacturer and hopefully a model number. If you find one it will most likely have a web site or contact info. I'm looking forward to see what you end up doing ...please post 'after' pictures.

I found one similar with a damaged cushion for $25.00. I used a corduroy upholstery fabric in alighter shade than the leather that I found in the sale bin for $2.99 a yard. So I covered all three cushions in it. Itlooked great. I sold the sofa for $300.00. The total cost for supplies was $65.00.

I would take the damaged cushion or cushions to a fabric store pick out the fabric of leather or contact the company who made it and ask for their help,To get it exact you may have to have all the cushions replaced and repaired. This is an uphostery shops field of work.If you can find a good one they do excellent job. Good luck
