How to winter over succulents?

I LIVE in west central IL and have succulents in pots and in the ground...not sure what to do?

put some wood shavings as a cover... after the first good frost.
Bring the pots inorganic the garage. How established are the in ground plants? Most succulents do not do well in freezing temps. You could dig up, pot over the winter and set out again next spring. Here are some links.

I have a big wooden container full of hens and chicks. I move it from my patio to a secluded area, next to my brick fireplace chimney. There is a little alcove there, where the chimney jests out. I throw some leaves on top, and it makes it. Have had it over 10 years this way. I live in Delaware, so a little farther south.
My mother always had succulents (hen and chicks) never did anything special and they are always good every spring. Could cover with leaves if you want.
I bring the flowers and succulents, into the garage, and the ones in the ground I put plastic on them to cover them. Be sure you leave room in the plastic over the flower don't pull it tight.
