I like my dark oak furniture, but I want to add black painted wood to the mix. Will it look classy or not ?

I think that black is a great idea. It is much better than trying to match the shaded of brown an coming up short. We always advise clients to have sharp contrasts in wood colors especially in the kitchen. If you have hardwoods- never try to match the cabinets tp them especially if they are different species of woods. It will never work. Black does work though. I would make sure that you try to keep all of the sheens consistent if you don't want the black to jump out at you. Here is ...» -

I am personally a fan of natural wood tones, so I would stick to the natural oak, but there are certainly some classy black painted wood pieces out there. -
thank you for the encouragement ! I am going to add the black chairs to the oak table -
You can also add a dark chocolate colored piece and in some lights it will look black while retaining it's warm wood tones. -
I agree black is a fabulous choice. I like it with the dark oak & feel that it will add warmth to the space. -
LeeAnn is right on target. Black creates a chic outline to enhance the wood. Here are some examples of how to incorporate touches of black that will make the beauty of wood stand out. -

Black always gives definition, needs to be used very thoughtfully! -
I love using black as an 'accent'/framing 'color' in design. When I decided to paint our kitchen, using gloss black trim, everyone around me was shocked and told me not to.. Until they saw the finished product. Our kitchen now looks like a little Italian cafe :) Great job, BTW... Which goes without saying ;) -
I'm a designer, and we use black with wood tones all the time - it's a great compliment to most wood stains. The only suggestion I'd live is to look for a distressed finish on your painted piece. It doesn't have to look beat up, but light distressing softens the black and helps it blend to the woods around it. -
I like white myself -- and will always choose this color over dark wood. Only because white goes with everything and every color. My preference only. Maybe I just like the light and airy feeling it gives when you walk into the room where dark cabinets can be elegant, but white is more open and light. I was told to go to decorating magazines and cut out pictures of kitchens that you would love in your home, and then when done, you will see the style and pattern that you gravitate towards. It does work, so why don't you try that.
