The Garden Frog with C Renee on Mar 20, 2014I am not sure but the purple flowers may be hellebores. Mahonia can be invasive in zones 7 and up. The grape like seeds can make this a very prolific plant. So be careful or these plants will take over.Helpful Reply

NancyLee on Mar 22, 2014Mahonia (oregon grape - Oregon's state flower) is one of my favorite healing plants - it has antibiotic, antifungal, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory and laxative properties and works actively on the liver to clean out the body. It's active ingredient is said to be berberine - however - it seems that the constituents of the plant as a whole are far more powerful than the use of the isolated berberine. Berberine (also in Barberry - another common landscape shrub and closely related herbal medicine) is what gives the striking yellow color to the roots (and also tells you it will be strong medicine.) It is also used sometimes as a substitute for goldenseal - another powerful medicine that is difficult to cultivate and has been overharvested in the wild. http://www.methowvalleyherbs.com/2012/11/oregon-grape-root-it-could-save-world.html http://www.nativeplantsociety.org/oregongrape.htm http://medherb.com/Materia_Medica/Hydrastis_-_Goldenseal_substitutes_.htmHelpful Reply
