Need info on under-rug pad to protect new vinyl laminate

Recently replaced 40-yr-old shag carpet and rotting pad (YUCK) with Tarkett vinyl flooring over cement slab (~4-in) on grade in home's totally open entry/greatroom/kitchen area. Want area rugs to warm the space now. What rugs and/or under-rug product(s) will not adhere to the vinyl and totally prevent new flooring from discoloration/other insults caused by typical rug backing material emissions over time? Details, please -- brand/mfr. names, material specs, specific sources for product(s) with which you've had experience (both good and bad) over, say, a 5- to 10-year period. Thanks in advance!

It may sound crazy, but what I did was buy some old sheets at the Goodwill store...mainly white ones. First, I cut the sheet to the size of the rug. Then, I turned my rugs over, laid the sheet over it...(this would be on the bottom of the rug), and did a running stitch all along the edge to hold the sheet in place. I used very long stitches....just enough to hold the sheet in place, but easy enough to take out if I ever wanted to send the rug out for cleaning, etc. This has worked great for me for years, and was very inexpensive to do as well. Just be sure when you are stitching the sheet on, you do not penetrate through to the front of the rug or your stitches will show.

Pose these questions to your installer or to Tarkett.

Hi, V Smith -- Will rely on Tarkett to provide answers; my installer did a phenomenally professional job of layout, pattern-matching, rolling, and seam sealing, but speaks mostly only Spanish.

Hi AJ, Here's what Tarkett has to say: http://www.tarkettna.com/Portals/0/ResidentialLVT/LVTFAQ.pdf

Suzette, thank you for the link you provided! Looks like the onus is on potential providers of area carpets to provide the information I need regarding their products' backings. Most helpful reply!

I never have had any of the problems you describe as I periodically pick up my area rugs and rubberized material meant to keep rugs from sliding and clean the flooring under them. Not just vacuum on top. This goes for laminate, wood, tile and vinyl. I also use a rug shampooer. I put a tarp under the larger area rugs to protect the flooring.

If you have lived with 40 year old carpeting, I think you will be surprised at the strides manufacturers have made today in addressing your concerns.

Hello, Sal -- Obviously you are a more organized, detailed home cleaner than I've been over the years. Given the huge $$ investment in my recent remodel, I've committed to staying on top of the basic tasks you detailed to ensure the house maintains its new value. Thank you for sharing your specific strategies -- I fully intend to adopt them!

There are rug pads available that have rubber on one side, felt on the other. You would have to check with the manufacturer if the felt side against your new Tarkett flooring would be safe for the flooring. Or if the edges of the rug will be anchored by furniture, you might select a rug that does not have any vinyl, latex or rubber in the backing.
