measure at different points in the closet...how straight is it? I’ve had a few wonky ones. Makes a difefence if one wall bulges a bit. Plan carefully, how much clothing to you hang, and how much gets folded. 95 % of mine is folded..wire shelf cubes work for me. Hang ups in your closet? You might want more than 1 hanging rod. Shoes...pocket storage hanging on the back of the door. Or in shoe boxes with picture of contents on shoe box on a shelf. And...purge those cloths you can’t wear...keep what fits you now. What doesn’t fit is in good condition take to consignment shop.
Needs change over the years. After purging stuff you don't need, consider flexible shelving or cube shelving. I bought two 8 cube units at IKEA for under $70.00. They are thinner than the Kallax/Expedit, but they work for me. In it, I put linens for my bedroom, handbags, etc. I don't have a lot of dresses or skirts, so I don't need much hanging space anymore.
Get rid of all your extra clothes before you plan your new closet....then group items by type...pants, shirts, dresses, etc. See how much space you need for each type/length of item...then build or buy shelving to fit your specific needs. Shoes should go at the bottom in clear plastic boxes so they can be stacked and kept clean.
