Lane cedar chest repairs

My father gave my wife this Lane cedar chest when mom pasted. I'm at a loss on how to repair the wood chewed by their dog. I was told fill and blend with auto body putty, by then it would need to be painted. No idea of the age either. The scroll (?) on the front is damaged on the right side.
Yes, the person you talked to was right. I worked for a very high end furniture store years back. If we had dog damage? or shipping damage our repair guy would use body puddy. Put it on as smooth as you can. Let dry, Several layers would be best with your damage. Sand it out by hand to get a smooth surface. you would then need to hand paint it with several colors. First a solid color to match the background color of the wood, Then a darker color to add in the grain. You would need to match the colors of the furniture by mixing the colors as well as possible. Try in a different area for color and practice like on the bottom. After polish the chest.
Not all furniture needs to be perfect. I have antique furniture and the legs and arms show the life they've lived. Polish it up and embrace its age and memories.
You could repair the damage just like you said and then just paint the repaired parts: the trim, scroll etc. That way, you keep the beautiful wood showing on most of it.
If it's important to you to have it looking like it did when it was new, I would consult a professional. They can replace portions that cannot be repaired. Good Luck!

There is wood filler that is stainable that would work on this.

I’m blessed to have my grandmas Lanes Cedar Chest. She bought it as a young girl at her first job working for Lane. I cherish it. It’s been moved and used and loved many times over...definitely showing it’s age. But I think that’s exactly what makes it so beautiful! Our family uses orange oil rubbed lightly into the wood, with no residue left on. It helps nourish the wood and gives it a warm shiny glow. Use cotton swabs to get into nooks and crannies.

Not related but just be aware that some older hope chests can be dangerous if children play in them. There was a tragedy in my area Where two siblings were locked in and died.
