Sure, they make great compost and can be tilled in when the season is over. However, beware, tomatoes do not like nitrogen (i.e. grass clippings) they like coffee and tea grounds. Plant them where there is not so much grass clippings.

I cover my garden year round with whatever is available, grass in the summer, leaves in the winter and spring to provide mulch that is healthy for the soil. I till it in each spring before I plant. It has never caused a problem with any of my veggies and I give away more than we eat to friends, family and neighbors, including my tomatoes. I only spend about maybe twenty minutes a week on weeds between the mulch and the Preen Weed Preventer that I put down after I plant before I put down anything for mulch. I only have to fight Creeping Charlie, it is root born, not germinated, and tree seeds that have germinated (not a weed until they spring up in the garden).

Good idea to be sure there is nothing has any kind of weed killer in it that could kill your garden.
