Well, hopefully you have winter hardy types to start.....but I usually just dead head mine. The weight of snow can make those dried flower heads very heavy and cause some breakage. In spring, I prune again back to healthy looking green buds and add a dash of fertilizer. Voila.....easy peasy.
What zone do you live in ?. I live in zone 5 , I leave them untouched all winter, in the spring when new growth appears, I break away the dead canes and clip the dead blooms . Sometimes cutting them down in fall especially in cold zones........ they don't bloom again.
