Is there a good way to add light to a large room?

We have a large family room with a vaulted ceiling with 2 can lights above the fireplace and 2 skylights. Is there a way to illuminate the room without cutting major holes in the walls or ceiling, or placing lamps every couple of feet around the room?
Thanks in advance,
Brian

Add more lighting with lamps and wall scones, paint the walls a light color, remove heavy dark curtains, replace flooring with something lighter. Keep the furnishings light and add accessories such as accent rugs and pillows that lighten the space.

You can install lighting behind moulding. InvitingHome.com has moulding designed for indirect lighting and it ranges from formal to contemporary. It's a very nice look in a large room.

    Recessed lighting is very nice.

In a large room, seating is usually arranged in groupings. Put lamps in the groupings. Large rooms do not need to have uniform lighting throughout.
