Here's a video on restoring a ladder. Make sure it's sturdy enough to keep you from falling!

Paint won’t keep it from rotting, but it will keep the wood from being exposed to further water, sun, and termites, if you use Kilz or special wood preservatives. Again, reinforce the steps, especially, with metal or wood strips. 😇

It is best to not paint a wood ladder if you will use it as a ladder as the paint will hide any new cracks or weak spots. Go ahead if you plan to use it for decorative purposes.

I would first saturate with a good termite killer. Then I would stain with an oil based stain and never, ever attempt to use it as a ladder. It would become a trellis for roses or better still, clematis. You might have to drape some sort of a mesh over it to give the tendrils something to hold to. Also set it on stone or brick; something so it would not stand in rain puddles.

OMG! If you need a ladder, please use a new one that is definitely safe! As far as the old wood one, it actually has value leaving it as is for decor reuse. Really need to know what you intend to preserve it for???
