While I could figure out how to do this, it is difficult to explain. If you are not an experienced carpenter, it could be a real challenge to do precise work which includes removing molding, carpeting and perhaps relocating electrical work as well precise cutting.
One suggestion would be to look for a large home entertainment center that can be found inexpensively since people are hanging their TVs on the wall and discarding these.
Reinforce the top part for hanging and use the drawers for sweaters/pants or shoes. Reforcing can be done by putting a 2x4 across each side on the inside, cutting a "V" groove to hold the hanging bar. Screw this 2x4 from the outside and glue on those flat wooden dots they use to cover holes. Then paint the color of the walls to make it disappear or make it an accent piece.
You can attach this to the wall for stability if you need to!
P.S. If you are doing a total renovation, putting in a closet is not problem.
