Can you post a pic of the chest? Do you want a shabby chic look, or just an aged look? Here is a pintrest link that has a bunch of ideas https://www.pinterest.com/explore/old-trunk-redo/?lp=true

I've attached a good example of a two toned chest. Use leather straps. Good luck.

it would help to see a picture. However, I would begin by distressing the piece by sanding down different areas such as corners, etc. You can then apply a brown wax all over the piece and wiping it down, making sure to not, wipe, hard in the distressed areas. Keep, doing this until you achieve the look you want. Another idea would be to sand the piece and use a stain gel in brown and letting the white come through in different areas. There are tons of examples here on Hometalk.

I would spray paint or brush paint a solid base color followed by layers of patina glazes on top.

It sounds like you want a "burnt orange" color (it is a milk chocolate brown). Ask for burnt orange antiquing kit at your home improvement store. They can help you. I did all my furniture in medium brown and they sold me the burnt orange kit. It was perfect. Be sure to explain you want medium brown.
