...and make it a coffee table, right? That is a classic! Very nice DIY. have the glass top cut but no pointy, sharp edges, smooth them down. maybe small of rubber to cushion the glass where it sits on the trunk. Some people put legs on the base or maybe create a raised platform with legs. Check out this pic attached:
Start by calling a business that does glass replacement, and see if you can purchase a piece. They will cut it to size, and finish off the edges.
I would take pic. and call around for the best price, and if price don't matter then take the pic. into a glass company and show them what you want done and they will like Ebbjdl said cut it the way you want it. They also give or should give you rubber cushions to put under it to hold in place. They will smooth the corners so that they won't be pointy. It looks very nice. I have the Campbell back and I wanted to do that to it, but I have it setting at the foot of our bed.
