Always test first to see if you actually have asbestos in your shingles or siding since many manufacturers made similar looking cement siding that contains no asbestos whatsoever. Some states offer free testing for residents, while others charge a nominal fee of $20 or less for testing services.

Testing for asbestos is not a suggestion, it is absolutely necessary for you health and even life. The fibers can even get into the air that you and your family breathe, causing serious lung ailments as well as cancer.

Let the pros do it. You do not want to deal with the possibility of exposure and problems with your health down the line. It is not fun, my father died from mesothelioma thirty years after working at a company that had products with asbestos. I have heard of people putting new siding over it, but deal with a pro, not your health problems down the road.
