How to prep your entrance door for refinish?

I want to re-coat my entrance door with clear coat varnish, other than use a brush to get rid of loose dust and particles, can I wash it down with solutions of some types ?

try TSP found in most big box home repair stores (Home Depot, etc) use as directed and it will clean the door
I would clean it with a de-greasing soap and then lightly sand down the entire door. During sanding is when you'll really see the areas that got the grungiest etc.
Take a broom and sweep it off and then wipe it down with any household cleaner.
