A "gripper paint" is very helpful as first coat.
A lot of people seem to be using chalk paint these days on their kitchen cabinets, I just used an interior paint by Sherwinn Williams to do mine, it's a whole lot cheaper. I didn't sand my cabinets but I did clean them really well with TSP before I started. It gets surfaces clean and prepares them for painting without having to sand.
I would suggest a light sanding, use a quality primer and then use an enamel paint. The enamel paint will dry with a harder finish and you can skip a coat of poly.
