It is not recommended practice. Down the road the paper will bubble and peel

It is possible to paint over wallpaper as long as the wallpaper is not pealing and in really good shape. The worry is that once your wet paint hits the paper, it may cause it to start coming off the wall because it will then be wet. I would do a patch and see how it goes initially but the recommendation would be to take the wallpaper off.

I have painted wallpaper in one of my rooms. I did it as a temporary fix until the wall could be stripped and painted properly. That was about 8 years ago. It has held up very well and why I never bothered to strip and repaint it. You need to use a quality paint. I put on a thin light coat of primer to seal the wallpaper. Then I painted. It took two coats but came out very well.

I just helped to renovate an older how with 4 rooms of painted over wallpaper. In some rooms--2 layers of painted over wallpaper. DON'T DO IT!! Use fabric softener to get the tough wallpaper off and be prepared to work REALLY hard to get it off. It could take a few days. Trying to remove painted over wallpaper was a NIGHTMARE. What could happen down the road--if you wanted to make changes--is that you would have to go over the painted over wallpaper with a skim coat of textured wall finish OR you would have to redo the sheet rock. It's more cost effective to remove the wallpaper now.

I don't recommend it. Not only does the wallpaper continue to peel, it also looks like painted wallpaper. Rent a wallpaper steamer, open the windows, and remove the stuff for once and for all. It's messy, but you'll only have to do it once. Then fix any issues with the sheetrock to make it smooth, sand it where needed, then paint. Painted wallpaper just looks tacky!

Depending on the wallpaper.... sometimes... but it is usually best if you remove the wall paper, wash the walls and then prime and paint... the results will be longer lasting and look better....

  • yes, you can but preparation is important. Maybe this can help
