Identifying 1940's Vintage decorative jewelry box

I bought these two boxes at an estate sale. One has an inscription inside with 1949 date.  Would like to find out more about them.

I think it might be a stationary box. Years ago when everyone wrote letters they had a special box to keep their paper, pens, envelopes, sealing wax and stamps in a safe place. Back then writing letters was the best way of communicating with loved ones, business aquantances and friends. Today hardly no one writes letters. I know in my life I pick up my cell phone and call or text them. LOL

I want to say hankies and gloves. The larger one would be the glove box and the smaller would accomodate handkerchiefs. My grandma had the same ones and after she passed that's what was in hers.
