Under the spruce

my neighbor has a very large spruce tree in their yard that shades our back yard, which is nice in hot weather but it's very hard to plant under. I am thinking about taking out my poor flower bed and replacing it with a small deck for my husbands hammock. any ideas on how to dress it up? needs to look good because it is our focal point looking out into the back yard.

Planting some Astilbe and Hostas in the shade, a woodland like path and the hammock area. A stone patio with thyme planted in between will be so much cooler than a deck. Good Luck, and have a good time doing this.
  • You need to check out what native plants are for your area. native plants will flourish under the pine tree. There are many ferns, wild azalea, and other shade loving perennials that you can sometimes find at garden centers and even Lowe's or Home Depot such as Jacob's ladder, false Solomon seal, and even native Columbines that will do well. You will be surprised once you start reading the list of natives for your area and discover that many can be sown from seed or found at local stores and garden centers. Black eyed Susans may also so well since they are very prolific self seeders, finches love them, and they grow just about anywhere. Happy gardening! and check out your native plants!

You're in Oregon, so I would suggest ferns (all varieties), perennial primroses (the smaller flowered ones, not huge flowered ones), hosta, columbine, violets, fushia (hanging basket or pedestal), huckleberries, vine maple... all grow very well under my cedars here in the Seattle area. Check your local nursery for more.
