There are several ideas on this Pinterest link. Some may be smaller but you can adjust the size.

1)Hang a door horizontaly, espically older doors.no glass inserts.. 2) a lattice panel ftom big box store, cheap easy to hang up. 3)I have seen 2 patio couch cushions hung horizontal one over the other for a double padded upholstered look the ties/ strings on the corners used to hang it on the wall with small nails..

My husband and I have a king bed and we have a project on our to do list of making a headboard using a door. Set the door on its side and attach a mantle going down the length of it. Paint the whole thing and attach it to the wall by anchoring it in the studs in the wall above our bed.

Cut a styrofoam shape or light weight board and cover it with quilt batting then cloth. Pull it tight to the bag and secure it with staples/glue/sewing, to make it stay. If you put it on temporarily, it can be removed and washed when needed. We made our head board out of sheer curtains and just draped them around the head of the bed and secured the wall with a print of a winter scene. See photo. Sometimes less is more.

Purchase a large canvas - or a trio of them - decorate and hang together as a complete headboard. It is both light weight and decorative.

Use some large pieces of foam board, pad it good first then put your fabric on. I made my window cornices with foam board and it worked out perfect.
