Sprinkle dry baking soda over the stain and work it into the fibers. Mix one-quarter cup peroxide with a teaspoon of dish detergent. Use only three-percent hydrogen peroxide. Pour or spray this over the baking soda and work into the carpet with a toothbrush.
Send it out for professional rug cleaning. Check your phonebook for Rug cleaners. They take your rug and clean it in a big vat, then block it to dry properly.
Without knowing what fiber you have in your rug, you will want to run a test on whatever you decide to do.
If you are cleaning in place the first thing you want to do is to make sure the floor underneath does not get damaged by placing something underneath to protect your floor...a large plastic garbage bag will work.
AND make sure that any residue in what you use is not harmful to your floor.

Of course this has to be done when the weather is warm. I have a slanted, concrete driveway and I lay mine out, wet them down with the hose, running lots of water through the fibers. If you don't have a slanted driveway you can lay the rug out across a couple of saw horses.
