Need help w/70’s globe light

I rent this awesome guest house but landlord refuses to update this one aspect. Any ideas out there? I can’t remove & replace so hoping for a way to doctor it up some. Not a fan of the industrial look, I’ve been told my decor has a “rustic vintage cozy” vibe.
HELP!!!

THANKS! ~~Patti

use command hooks, the small clear ones, on the top you could hang doilies or wrap grape vines around the globe.

It looks pretty big, but I was thinking if you could get one of the old metal milk crates and somehow set it on the globe to come down around it. Here is a Pinterest post to give you an idea of what I mean.

Thank you! I think it might be too big for something metal. Not sure the cord could support any real weight beside the globe.

I know you said you "can't remove" but how about temporarily removing it, storing the globe in a safe place until you are ready to move and replace it with a paper lantern, or a upside down wire basket, decorated to match your décor?

Oh I SO wish I could. I’m actually friendly with the owners & they visit sometimes, so that’s not an option. I appreciste your thoughts though!

Is it possible to place a heat-proof 'frame' or 'halo' onto it that rests on top of that globe/fitting? Then dress that frame in an artsy way that blends with your decor...

Thanks! I’m guessing that’s about the only choice i have, but haven’t come up with an idea of what exactly to do that would work.

Noni has a good point about using heat-proof materials in this potential project. If there ever was a fire caused by heat escape prevention due to anything pasted, or put over the original fixture, your insurance claim would most likely not be approved. You might also be fined an additonal amout for damanges incurred as you are not the owner of the property.

I hate to say it but it’s back again, how about spraying the goldtone all black or that’s not an option then add a black fabric cord cover over it and a primitive greenery around the top like on your mirror as showing in the photo📌

Thanks! Can’t do anything permanent like painting it. I might give that a try! Hadn’t thought of a cord cover. Appreciate all the thoughts! I’ll post pix of what I come up with.

    I think it's cute.

How big is the globe? I had an image in my head of a wire ball surrounding it. I was thinking you could use coat hanger wire that has been painted black or bronze. Then I did a little googling and found wire hanging baskets that are made for garden plant hangers that could be purchased and placed back to back to make a wire ball around the globe. It wouldn’t hide the globe but it would make it look a lot more rustic. then I found this which seems like just what you’re looking for: http://chickadeehomestead.com/2014/06/diy-farmhouse-lamp-shade.html

I actually really like that lamp. :) Maybe try putting a colored bulb in it to give a different look?

    • Patricia Miller Patricia Miller on Nov 20, 2017

Thanks — I hadn’t thought of colored bulbs. Maybe green or red for Christmas.... THANKS for sharing your idea!

I'd remove the globe, as you would to replace a bulb. Use those new bulbs that look old, like Edison types. Let it show and don't replace globe. Make a creative shade that better matches your decor. Maybe a lightweight plastic solar light like i found at Menards. Cheap and cut groove to slide cord into the center. Remove candle. Cover the cord. Use led or cooler lights to prevent heat problems!

Recycled metal frame from a lampshade; then lightweight objects such as thin copper, tin, or other art-metal leaves for example or geometric patterns, beads, 'feathers', etc.

Another great idea! And I’m in LOVE with leaves & FEATHERS! I’ll see what I can come up with. THANK YOU!

You could make a “string” globe cover like people do using a balloon or beach ball and twine dipped in a glue wash. Would look really chic and is temporary.

it was a really big thing in the 70s. A boho, cozy, soft kind of a look. I’m not big on the industrial thing myself lol hopefully you find a look that works!!

Try putting a large drum shade over it. IKEA sells some unique shades.

    • Patricia Miller Patricia Miller on Nov 20, 2017

There’s an IKEA about a half mile south of me, I’ll have to get down there to look. Thank you for your idea!

Your landlord doesn't want you to replace it - that means you could remove it, at least the glass ball, and store it. Once that's gone, you can see the fixture and how to attach a shade more to your liking!
