I had my butter lettuce in a large pot, probably at least twenty inches across or more this year. I had six lettuce plants around the edges and a orange pepper plant in the middle. It was in such a spot that it got very little afternoon sun and therefore lasted into august before it finally bolted. The lettuce plants kept growing and putting out great lettuce leaves as the plants were almost three feet high. As long as you have fairly bright light on them, they should do good. If you don't think they are getting enough light, use a plant light, but that may be too much light for them to last long before they bolt. The other would to be use a light that is labeled day light. It isn't as bright as a grow light, but is still full spectrum like sun light. With the right care, you should be able to grow lettuce in your house this winter without a problem.
Try hydroponics. My son's classroom does it. They use artificial growth lights. Look on Pinterest for ideas on hydroponics because a tower is $900. I promise you, it's possible to do it for a lot less money.
