There's two schools of thought: yes and no. There are some concerns about any fungus, etc. that may be on the leaves, especially where your roses are concerned. I use leaves in my beds but live in the Gulf coast region. I've not had any problems, but there again it's a very different climate.

I have always mulched all my gardens with the leaves that fall off all of our very big and mature trees and have never had any problems. In the spring I take the excess off my front gardens that are mostly hostas but have a hydrangea also. I have never had any problems. In my veggie garden out back I really pile on the leaves for the winter. I remove some of them where they are real thick and pile them in the corner to break down on their own and till in the rest along with the grass that was applied all summer. I have not had any problem with that garden either.

Hi Linda, I purposely leave leaves in garden beds as mulch, plus it helps stop weeds comming through. I have Roses and bulb flowers, plus Alice. Kay Adelaide Australia
