I met a woman recently who said she prunes her peonies mid summer. Instead of killing the bloom, she delays it until early fall.
Don't know where you live, but here in Colorado, we've just cut ours back. In our climate, they die back naturally, but we prefer the tidiness of just cutting them back when it starts getting cold. They'll grow back from the ground up in the spring!
