Are you looking for children's crafts in relation to the coming holidays? One fun thing is to make ice cube candles. Place a tapered candle in a juice waxy carton or similar waxy carton like half and half. Cut it to come to the top of the carton, for example short half pint milk cartons might take 1/3 or 1/4 of a tapered candle where as the tall quart juice one may need the entire candle. Center the candle in the container and put in ice chips all around it to the top of the container. Have an adult melt candle wax and one waxy crayon for color (the cheapest ones work best being more waxy) and after the wax is melted, pour it in the container over the ice. Let it set for an hour or more while the chips melt. Tear off the container over the sink and let out all the water. The candle will be lacy from solidifying around the chips. If you use 3 different sizes for a group, they make a beautiful gift for a teacher or child care worker. Wrap gently in tissue paper and put in a gift bag. Encourage the children to pick the color crayon that would be the color favorite of the recipient, rather than their own favorite color. This helps them to identify with others in a loving and kind way. Some may want to use the holiday colors like for the fall, or the traditional Christmas colors of red, green, and gold or silver. A second idea is to have them water color coffee filters. Cut an Arch shape from a piece of construction paper as it is folded in half. Glue the dried water color inside the folded arch, cut the shape to fit the arch outside edge, and you have a cathedral window. A third idea may be to put contact paper on clean vegetable cans (empty and washed) to make pretty planters or pencil holders. Googly eyes or miniature pom pom balls may be added if you find any with contact paper with characters on them. Even duct tape comes in multi designs now and could be used in place of the contact paper or in conjunction with it. These are 3 ideas to help you get started on thinking. One activity our children enjoyed for Thanksgiving was to make a center piece of turkeys for the table (or even their own table where the children sat). Use toothpicks in an apple and miniature colored marshmallows for the tail of the turkey, and one mini marchmallow for the head. They could even apply red cake icing from a tube for the gobbler and dark icing tube just to touch the side for the eyes. These need to be the smallest tubes they sell in the craft section of the Walmart stores. Children not so little could make beaded friendship bracelets, paint a miniature wooden shelf for their room decor, or even build a clock from a CD (for the face of the clock) and clock kit from a craft store.
