This is a very big job. Sand down the wood, apply the stain (2-3 coats), then use a poly sealer topcoat. You might consider painting the spindles white as well as the front part of the stairs, just staining the rails and tops of the stairs for a classic look and it will be easier to paint the spindles vs. sanding and staining them. Here is an example of what I am referring to.
Cindy is right, this is a huge job. Do what she says if you don't enjoy a big mess for a long time.
Plus, you won't be able to go up and down the stairs unless you just do the right side then the left.

I've never used gel stain, but have read lots of posts about using it to redo cabinets and trim. Worth a read.
There is a post in this Home Talk. check it out! A lady strips and re stains her staircase @ paints the railings white. Her instructions are easey to follow, plus she shows pics with every step. It is different, but nice. Good luck Kay Adelaide Australia
