Everyone who has done landscaping for me has recommended mulch. Don't spread without glove. A friend of mine got a fungus under her thumbnail, and the dermatologist said it was probably from working with mulch without gloves - just bare hands. Also, I have seen on TV (NBC News) stories about rubber playing fields made from ground up tires and videos of the "puffy stuff" that comes out of the fields when people run or bounce balls on the rubber mulch. Some children who have played sports on these rubber mulch fields have contracted cancer, and scientists are looking into the possibility this is not good for us.
I think mulch is the best as when it deteriorates, it adds minerals to the soil. I would never use anything like rubber...

Bark, because it eventually decomposes.
I used the red cedar mulch and really liked it. You may have to add more over time. It looks good in the garden.
