Have small canvas painting & would like to paint wall behind it like pictur frame

That's a cute idea. Let's say your picture is 9" X 12" and you want a frame 12" X 15". . . just paint that block of color on your wall but first determine if it would be easy to nail the picture hook into the space.
Another similar idea Ive done was to get larger inexpensive thrift store frame, put in a thin wooden or masonite painted backer as filler.....and then place the art piece inside centered for more visual impact.
For a small piece you could use formcore and fabric instead of masonite and paint.
