Jute twine would work or heavy duty fishing line.
I wonder if a thinner chain suited for outdoor use ( non rusting) would work? They sell chains by the foot at big box hardware store.
Additionally I have also replaced some of my commercial winds chime strings with cording from jewelry making areas in craft stores. Theres all sorts of colors in nylon cording. You may want to see what's available there Looking for something that wont rot when exposed to your weather conditions.
