I want to build an indoors fountain.

I want to take a small child's pool, spray it with a granite spray paint, seal it with a waterproof sealer, then add a lighted rock waterfall, put a rock base all around the fountain, after cutting a small circular hole in backside for the cord and plug to go through and not be visible. My husband says the water will get in the rocks then eventually start to smell. It only takes a gallon of water to keep the fountain (approximately 3 ft tall) running. It also has built in lights, so you can see and hear the soothing sounds when the lights are out. It would fit perfectly in the corner of my dining room. Who is right...me or my husband? Thanks for weighing in.

As long as the water is moving and you clean the filter you should be fine

You don't mention a filter. You really need one for this project.

  • You need a filter for this project. Rocks do not smell unless covered in algae. To combat that just add a few drops of vinegar once a week to keep it reasonably clean. Completely possible.

Make sure you have a good filter that is easy to clean and take care of when it needs to be cleaned. Something like vinegar or another chemical may be necessary to combat the algae that will present at some point. Keep the tubing you use clean and rinse it with vinegar when you clean it or it will get algae growing in it and it will spread from there. I have had aquariums for over 30 years and the tubing can cause problems in the fountain, the filter and the rocks. The vinegar will help keep both bacteria and the fungus problems to a minimum.

Thanks everyone for the advise! I will make the filter and tubing a priority! - Laura ❤
