I had the same problem...and I also live in the mountains. I found that not feeding the birds was step number one. Rodents love bird seed and sunflower seeds as much as birds do! The next step was to plant things with pungent oils such as feverfew and herbs. Now that the rodents no longer view my garden as a restaurant, they pretty much stay away and I can have a few flowers tucked among the herbs and the succulents.

Hi June. I put red hot pepper flakes in my pot and even in the garden. It works for me. I also have a garden owl that I move around in the garden every 3 days. Fake rubber snakes help too.

I feed the chipmunks in a separate area from where they get into plants, both pots and in the soil. I feed them stale cereal, cookies, nuts, granola, anything like that. I also pepper my gardens with grated Irish Spring soap and something hot like cayenne pepper powder or red pepper flakes. If they persist, I put out mouse traps baited with peanut butter. I have never caught a chipmunk, but it scares the bejesus out of them and they stay away for a good while. I had one chipmunk hole in my veggie garden by my peppers. I set out a trap and it was tripped the next morning and the hole had been destroyed when it made its escape and the hole never showed up again or anywhere else in the garden.
